Welcome to Diana K Miller Interiors, purveyor of custom and hand sewn Victorian & Bohemian Silk Lampshades.  

I create one of a kind works of art, utilizing an array of extravagant vintage textiles and self mastered dyeing techniques.  I have been making beautiful shades for over 36 years. 

Every piece commissioned or imagined is truly a labor of passion.  I adore seeking out unique vintage textiles from around the world and incorporating them into my constantly evolving capabilities and portfolio.  My shades are created with artful originality. No piece will match another, adding to its ability to be cherished for not only a lifetime, but lending itself to becoming an heirloom for generations.
 

Every shade I create is inspired by a deep admiration of the natural world.  The warm glow of sunsets, forests, gemstones, as well as flora and fauna on land and in sea are just some of the thoughts that inspire my designs.  The eternal beauty of our natural world finds its way into my art. 

Light, and therefore color, is inherent to the essence of a lampshade, and plays an important role in my creations. I am an accomplished colorist  combining a love of very unique hues.  Some using  a lovely ombré fade from one color to the next, others ranging from subtle muted tones to bold saturation and vibrancy. I create romantic old style designs to new age beauties.
 

Many frame shapes are designed myself and thus won't be seen elsewhere. All shades are sewn by hand and all textiles are hand dyed. They are created using the same long established traditions reminiscent of the late 19th century victorian era, as well as early 19th century bohemianism. I delight in utilizing unique, rare, and vintage timeless textiles.  Some shades have rosettes and fan pleats with silk chiffon offering softness to the design just as the classic shades were designed over 100 years ago.   A variety of laces including Metallic, Guipure, Alencon, and vintage wedding dress are used. Burned out silk velvets, embroidered silk textiles, vintage Kimonos, delicate and rare appliques, and religious vestment appliques are some of my favorite textiles.  With multi layering of textiles, my shades take on a depth of their own.  I use fine quality twist fringe, also reminiscent of the Victorian era, and love to design my own hand strung beaded fringe. Beaded fringes consist of crystal, glass, metal, and cloisonné beads, which add elegance and extraordinary luminescence to the design, resulting in a final charming masterpiece. 

Although the depth and gorgeousness of these shades cannot be fully perceived in photographs, they are magnificent and even more remarkable in person.
